The Role

Sets up and operates radial drill press to perform drilling and other machining operations such as boring, reaming, and tapping/spot facing holes in metal work pieces by performing the following duties.

What you will be responsible for:

• Set up and operates radial drill press to perform drilling and other machining operations such as boring, reaming, and tapping/spot facing holes in metal work pieces.
• Study specifications and machining instructions such as job order, blueprint, process sheet, or layout on work piece, to determine hole locations and size and setup requirements, including tooling, feed rates, and cutting speeds.
• Plan sequence of operation, determines suitable work holding arrangement, and fastens holding fixture or jig on machine base to hold work piece and guide cutting tool.
• Lift work piece manually or with hoist and positions and secures it on machine base or in fixture or jig with clamps and bolts.
• Verify position with surface gauges and height gauges.
• Select cutting tool, installs it in machine spindle, and moves controls to set cutting speeds and feed rates.
• Operate controls to swing radial arm over work piece, position cutting tool over hole center location, engage power feed, and to advance tool into work piece.
• Turn valve handle to start flow of cutting oil and coolant against cutting tool and work piece.
• Observe machining operation and periodically verifies conformance of machined work piece to specifications.
• Maintains production record of parts and jobs fabricated as required by the Department Manager.
• Regular attendance, ability to arrive at work punctually, ability to work on–site, ability to work overtime.

• Ability to work cooperatively with others, ability to deal respectfully with the public, customers, vendors, other employees, managers, and executive management.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, ability to interchange with others in the department.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to read & understand calipers & micrometers.
• Ability to comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos in English.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (required levels)

• High School Diploma or General Education degree (GED) preferred. Prior experience preferred, but not required.
