Unit Type: Med Surg / Telemetry
Location: 3rd Floor (across two buildings)
Number of Beds: 48

• Nurse:Patient Ratio:
  • Nights: 1:5–6
  • LPNs available to assist
  • Virtual Nurses assist with admissions & discharges
  • Primary Care Nursing Model frequently used – must be comfortable with this
• Charge Nurse:
  • Day Shift: Usually a Blessing staff nurse
  • Night Shift: May be house supervisor with smaller assignment

• CNA/Nurse Aides: Available, but may be pulled for sitter coverage. Nights have greater CNA needs.
• Telemetry Techs: Yes. RNs are still responsible for interpreting strips.
  • Telemetry Brand: Draeger
• Respiratory Therapy: Available
  • Equipment: CPAP (home), Airvo (possible), occasional BiPAP (patients may stay on unit)

• Surgical/Neuro Focused:
  • Laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI, total joint replacements (hips/knees), hernia repair, ostomies
  • Fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA/AKA
• Medical/Complex Care:
  • Sepsis, chronic pain management (narcotics), diabetes (dialysis on floor), TPN/Lipids, IV antibiotics
  • PCA use, epidurals
• Urgent OR Cases: Admitted to unit

• Required Certifications:
  • BLS
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Required Skills/Experience:
  • Minimum 1 year surgical nursing experience
  • Experience with total joints , PCA pumps , narcan , TPN/lipids , narcotic usage , sepsis management
• Drip Titration:
  • Heparin (per protocol)

• Shifts: 3x12s, start at 0700
• Self-Scheduling: Allowed
• Block Scheduling: Not guaranteed – discuss with leadership
• Schedules Posted: 6 weeks in advance
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday & Sunday)
• Holiday Requirement: Rotates with core staff
• Call/Standby: None

• Floats only to like units
• If floated to higher acuity , will function in a support role only – no patient assignment

• Unit Orientation: 1 full 12-hour shift on assigned unit
• First Day: 12–14 hours (includes competencies, computer modules, general hospital orientation)

• Scrub Color: Black
• Scrubs Provided: Not specified – assume not provided unless stated otherwise

• Fast-paced unit with heavy patient loads
• Can receive 8–12 surgical admits per day alongside discharges
• High acuity, requires experienced and adaptable nurses
